I’m running the grey model. Great bike and runs well. Yamaha is the only superbike company to design and build it in-house (everyone else uses Bosch), but Yamaha, with its innovative 6-axis IMU, it actually works wonders. You can ride it like a video game. Open the gas and look at the exit. The brakes suck, though, and feel vague and wooden. I immediately replaced the entire system with a Brembo MC, Spiegler SS lines, and EBC pads, removing the ABS unit, and it feels worlds better. It’s also tall compared to older R1’s, and the tank has a funny shape- the extended carbon tank was recommended to me by the guys at SBU (who work with MotoAmerica teams running R1’s), and yes, much better lock-on points for your outside knee/thigh. FTECU software derestricts the ECU and with an exhaust and filter, you have a nice 187-192RWHP. And the best midrange and exit drive (IMO) of any modern bike.
There might be faster bikes, more powerful bikes, and better-sounding bikes, but damn, a Ducati is just so perfect. It has the carbon wheels and brake masters from the Superleggera, the standard engine (instead of the 998cc homologation spec V4R that costs extra to maintain), the dry clutch from the V4R, suspension from the S, and its own paint.

Heavy clutch, awkward switchgear, the fueling they didn’t really sort until later models, it’s top-heavy, guzzles fuel, and you’re always looking for a petrol station. The gearbox took ages to loosen up, and you roast in summer; it eats tires, but…
…when you open it up, in any gear, at any revs, you forgive it everything. Nothing else like it. The way it makes power everywhere is incredible.
I’ve taken it for long weekend trips in France and Belgium a few times. You’re limited to what you can carry in a knapsack and a tank bag.

I had a 2005 CBR1000RR for about a year. One of my favorite bikes I’ve ever had. A great intro to liter bikes if you’re upgrading from a 600cc because it’s not overly torquey in the low range, but you can really feel the power on the freeway. Took mine from around 32,000 miles to 38,000 with no problems. (I’ve ridden or owned an R1, GSXR 750, CBR 954, and ZX10R, and although better in some ways, I liked my CBR1000RR overall the most).
